## How a True Hourly Rate Works

Your advertised hourly rate usually counts gross pay divided by paid time. A true hourly rate starts with take-home pay, subtracts job costs, then divides the result by paid hours plus unpaid time tied to work.

That makes job offers easier to compare. A higher salary with a long commute, parking, extra meals, and unpaid overtime can leave you with a lower real hourly rate than a smaller offer that takes less from your week.

## What to Include in the Calculator

Use costs you would not have without the job: commuting, parking, tolls, required clothing, added childcare, and meals or coffee you would not buy otherwise. Leave personal spending out so the result stays tied to work.

For commute costs, the IRS mileage method uses the business standard mileage rate: 72.5 cents per mile for January through June 2026 and 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026, after the IRS raised it mid-year in Announcement 2026-11. The calculator defaults to the current 76-cent rate, and you can edit the field if you are costing earlier miles. The actual vehicle method is better when your fuel economy or maintenance costs are far from the default mileage estimate.

## Taxes and Paycheck Planning

The tax estimate uses 2026 federal brackets, FICA rates, the $184,500 Social Security wage base, and simplified state income tax rules. Local taxes, credits, and payroll settings can change the final number.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about true hourly rate calculator

### What is a true hourly rate?

A true hourly rate is your estimated take-home value divided by the time a job actually takes. That includes paid hours, commute time, unpaid overtime, unpaid breaks, and work-only prep.

### Does this calculator include taxes?

Yes. It estimates 2026 federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare Tax when it applies, and state income tax for all 50 states plus D.C.

### Which work costs should I include?

Include costs you would not have without the job, such as commuting, parking, tolls, required clothing, extra meals, childcare tied to workdays, and other recurring work expenses.

### Should I include employer-paid benefits?

Benefits are optional because they do not always become spendable cash. Turn them on when you want to compare total compensation, and leave them off for a cash-only view.

### How is commute cost estimated?

You can use the IRS business mileage rate (76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026; 72.5 cents for January through June 2026), enter your own fuel and wear-and-tear cost, or use a daily transit or rideshare amount.

### Why is my true hourly rate lower than my advertised rate?

The advertised rate usually counts gross pay divided by paid hours. Taxes, commute costs, unpaid time, and work expenses reduce what you keep for each hour the job takes from your week.

### Is this a tax filing calculator?

No. It is an estimate for planning and comparison. Local taxes, credits, itemized deductions, and payroll settings can change your final result.
